An old photo.

Posted by MWPA on May 27, 2009

I have so many things I should be doing, but instead of doing them I am looking back through the last yar at the photo’s I have taken. Its great to see how I have improved, I cant belive how many pictures that I thought were great at the time actually are terrible and not focussed corrrectly due to me using the wrong settings, I am reeditting a few pictues too, just to see if any are savable, here is one that a little bit of editing changed completely, this is my new desktop background!

RIP Romeo.

Posted by MWPA on February 16, 2009

romeo-001Romeo was one of the cats at the shelter where I volunteer at, He was diagnosed with Kidney failure last week, unfortunately he was unresponsive to his meds so today was taken to be put to sleep.
He was a great cat with a unique personality he had a few missing teeth so his tongue often hung out of his mouth which made him look even cuter. He was a semi permanent resident at our no kill shelter, as people dont like adopting older cats…
so RIP Romeo.

A New Camera.

Posted by MWPA on February 12, 2009

001For a while I have been thinking about staking up film photography, you know the kind of photography that doesnt seem to be very common any more, we have defiantly been taken over by a digital age, and with nice film camera’s available at low prices I though I would give it a try.

My forever friend,  Sharon actually inspired,me, she has an old nikon,  that she uses and I like seeing the pictures she makes with it-when she gets round to uploading the scanned prints! HINT HIMT, if you are reading this Sharon!

So I took the plunge on Ebay, I spent $29.52 plus shipping on an Olympus OM-G or an OM-20 depending on what part of the world you are from. The cameras were in production between 1983 and 1987, so I have a camera, that is as around the same age as me, which I find rather cool.004

The camera that I purchased came with an Olympus 50mm 1.8 lens and a Vivtar 70-210 lens which can be used for Macro and Zoom. The lenses are in great condition, there apears to be no dust inside them or the camera, there are a few scuff marks where they may have been dropped, but apart from that the lenses are great. The camera on the other hand has a damaged dial, the dial is cracked and when I change the settings the dial comes off. It is not a big problem as the camera is still functional, but it is a litte irritating, as you can see in the picture.

It certainly was an experience trying to find a manual for this camera on line, and I definatly needed a manual, I had no idea how to open the back of the camera to put a film in-which actually turned out rather easy. I took the camera out on Sunday with a black and white film so I could test everything out, adn I was very happy. It is different having to focus everything yourself, although the split image screen helps greatly with this. The zoom lens was heavy, so I mainly shot withthe 50mm and I got some nice results, I had them developped at Ritz Camera store and the photos look great. I did upload the pictures to my computer through my scanner, but the images lost some quality, I will post a picture of my favourite on eanyway.

The pictures of the camera, I took with my canon 30d, and a couple of continuous lights with a white paper back ground.

An Important Day

Posted by MWPA on February 12, 2009

Two Weeks ago Will came home from work saying he needed to borrow my camera, and that he needed me to teach him how to use it, I asked him why and said its taken me a year to get to know my camera, and I still have lots to learn. He explained he had been asked to help photograph a promotion ceremony for one of his colleagues. Well it turned out that the day of the promotion was my day off, so he said GREAT, you can do it then…So I agreed.

I went in the morning of the ceremony to the rehearsal to find out exactly what I was up against, the lighting was terrible, as I fired off a few practice shots, I was informed that I would be up in front of about 40 people taking these pictures, so it was like I would be on display too. I was extremely nervous about messing up, I had never taken pictures like this, I wasn’t sure how the whole thing would work, but I was up for a challenge. I went home and looked at my test shots, and became even more nervous, I wasn’t sure my lens would be up to it or my flash powerful enough without being to harsh.

At three o’clock people started arriving and the ceremony was soon underway, I used a short zoom lens-the 18-55 kit lens, so I could be close and still gt everything in the shot, and I angled my flash to the ceiling so it would bounce a soft light to the subject, I turned my camera ISO up so I would not underexpose, and I ended up being happy with the pictures. I took about 60 photos and 28 of those were good enough to be printed at 8×10 if they wanted.

The whole thing was very nerve racking, I had to remind myself to breath in front of all those people, of course I know they were not looking at me, but it didnt make me feel any less uncomfortable. I think if given the opportunity  I would do another ceremony, although maybe I would charge instead of doing it for free as it took up a lot of my time, I spent the whole day going between base and home and then a few hours processing the photographs.

Here is one of the photos from the ceremony, I wont post the others, as I don’t have any model releases.

Picture of the day is….

Posted by MWPA on January 23, 2009

MellowMellow! (click to see it larger.

Yesterday I went to the dollar stor to buy some props that I could use with my photography,as I am trying to practice and get better with my lighting skills, I also wanted to get some props suitable for my valentines day project. I chose to go to the Dollar Tree because they  are cheap, and I figured there must be some things they sell there that I could use. Well I ended up spending just about $8.00 and came away with 3 bunches of flowers, some valentines day candies, a vase and some pebles to fill the vase and some hearts on sticks. After visiting te Dollar Tree I went toi the next store along which is Ben Franklins craft store,I always find the store a little pricy but I knew the sold fabric and I wanted to see if they had anything suitable for a background. I ended up choosing 3 yrds of mottled blue material that makse quite a nice background.

The pictures that I took were using my camera-a 30d and the nifty fifty lens-named that because it is cheap and neat, it is the Canon 50mm 1.8, I love how sharp this $80 lens is, and I use it alot. I attached my external flash the 430exii and pointed the flash to the cieling so Mellow wouldnt get the red eye effect but he would still be lit nicely. The flowers came out so bright and colourful, I think this may be my favourite picture of the year-yes I know its only January!

I am going to try and take a picture a day from this point on, so that I can get more cresative with the things I have aailable, even if its just things outside my appartment, I really want to push my creativity, as I feel that my photography lacks the wow factor.

I am also going to push myself to learn a forighn languarge, We have a Rosetta Stone CD which was given to Will and I, so I really want to try and learn some Spanish-especially as it is spoken so widly accross the world.I am not sure how well I will do, as I have never been good at getting the accents correct, but I guess practice makes perfect. Even if I get a couple of ‘lessons’ in before work, eventually the language has to start sinking in, hasnt it?

Today is…

Posted by MWPA on January 22, 2009

Abstract natureA house work day, I have decided I want to spring clean-even though its not quite spring yet. I want to rearange the craft room, to utalise the space in there, as it is a small room , and with all my junk in it, it feels alot smaller! If I get all the spring cleaning doe, I am going to go to the dollar store and see if I can pick up some valentine day props for my photography prject and maybe stop in at the craft store next door and buy some fabrics for back grounds.

Its quite a cold day today, although not as cold as it was last night, the sun is shining, which makes it feel a tiny bit warmer than it really is. I am looking forward to the spring weather, when I can go out side with just a hoodie and jeans on, and be plenty warm enough taking pictures-right now, my hands may freeze to the camera when I am outside!

Todays picture was taken a couple of weeks ago at Sandy Bottom Nature Park I focused on the branches and let the water go out of focus-this kind of out of focus is called Bokeh. The lighter spots are the suns reflection on the water, I like how the branches have a tiny bit of light high lighting them.

Well I supose I must stop wasting ime by blogging and get to work on this cleaning frenzie that is going to be done, I am going to turn the music up loud, sing and dance while I clean!

A couple of goals for the next few months

Posted by MWPA on January 21, 2009

Number one is obviously to improve and learn to use my current photography equipment to the max.

I have two projects that I would like to work on, I am aiming to get 24 landscape and 24 portrait shots of the cats at the cat shelter, I then want to create a calender with a selection of these pictures, as well as greeting cards. I also want to create some valentine stock style pictures that I can maybe turn into greeting cards too, none of this is to make me money, really just to inspire me to take more pictures and learn more, and maybe let someone benefit from the pictures I take, if the cat ones come out ok then I will donate the calenders to the shelter for them to sell.

I think I want to design some business cards too, that way if I am out and about with my camera I and am asked about what I am doing, I can hand them a card and say visit my zenfolio site for information.

Here is a cat picture of Zoe, who decided to make a bed with my walmart bag that is usually used for carrying camera accessories into the cat corner, Zoe was brought to the Cat Corner after her owner had to go to an assisted living home.

Turned out to be a chilly one…

Posted by MWPA on October 28, 2008

After my new windows were installed, I eventually made it out with Ember and her friend Cortney for a photo shoot. There was not much light left by the time we arrived at Oyster Point City Center, I had a few ideas in my mind what I wanted to do, and achieved two of them, I wanted to get a photograph of one of the ‘models’ leaning on the railings and another spinning round the lampost.

Even though the sun was shining and the morning was warm, as the day came

to an end there was a bitter wind with an icy rain falling, so it ment while we were doing the photographs we were all freezing, my hands got so cold holding my camera that I lost all feeling in my thumb-which has never happened before, so it looks like I will be investing in some gloves or handwarmers…

These are four of the best pictures from last night-spinning around the lamp post, leaning on the railings and some head/shoulder shots. (click to enlarge)

Eventhough it was dark and cold, I am glad I got some practice with my flash, although its still pot luck if i get a good shot or not with it, I have to keep adjusting my settings for the flash.

Ember and Cortney-Thanks for coming out!

Vacation Time

Posted by MWPA on August 28, 2008

Well as many of you know my parents and sister are visiting Will and I in Virginia, They arrived Tuesday evening and will be heading to Washington DC on Monday to catch their flight back to England.

Yesterday was our first full day with them and we tried to do some fun stuff even though the weather was gray and nasty, we went to Newport News Park and then to WIlliamsburg to visit the Yankee Candle Store – which is huge! and then to the Prime outlet mall where I bought a tshirt some sneakers and Will bought a couple of things in the Timberland store.

While walking in Newport News park not even 15 minutes into our walk I really had to use the restroom, of course there was no restroom nearby, and to get to one would involve walking back to the car-which only my dad could drive-due to the rental agreement and everyone was moaning at me, so I ended up finding a secluded spot and using it, which was extremely embarrassing! I cant remember the last time I had to do that…

While walking we stopped often to take pictures and a few times we caught glances of the wildlife, Will was walking ahead and told us to be quiet as there were a small herd of deer grazing, after they saw us they ran , but didn’t run to far and I was able to sneak up and get some pictures, they were about 50 meters away.

Canon 30d with the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro Lens, mode set to manual F/5.0, 1/125seconds with ISO set to 640, focal length 168.

For post processing I applied a high pass layer set to soft light and reduced the noise on a separate layer with a reduced opacity. This image is also cropped.

I have other photos to add from the trip to the park, but Ill do that later.

Whats up?

Posted by MWPA on July 28, 2008

The cat above is Siren, I took the picture for the Cat Corner’s website, she is about 8 years old, and is very pretty, she has a funny personality, she is protective of other cats and if one is upset, like if you are clipping another cats claws she will come along and attack you to tell you to stop upsetting the cat!

I seem to be working 5 days a week a the moment, the shifts vary, we open at 10 so the earliest I ever have to start work is 930. The latest we stay open is 10, so the latest i should work to is 1030, I am hoping I wont have to work to many ‘close’ shifts. On Saturday I worked to 1030 and then drove to meet Will and we ended up not getting home til gone 12.00 I still volunteer at the cat shelter on Saturday mornings so I spent the morning working cleaning cat poop and then I came home had a 45 minute nap and went to work.

So far I am enjoying working at BestBuy, Its not to repetative which is nice. I still have a lot to learn but I think I am getting there, I think. I now have my name bage but am awaiting my blue shirt which is the uniform. It seems that my size is out of stock, so I have to wait a little bit longer before I blend in a little bit more.

Hopefully tomorrow we will have the answer from the insurance company to let us know if our car is being totalled if it is we have to decide what cars to buy, we will be etting two, one car that could be daily driver and project for will and maybe a slightly more practical car for me.

I will keep you updated…..
